Celebration of Kenya’s 49th Independence Anniversary
Kenyans and friends of Kenya gathered at the Kenya Embassy on 14th December 2012, to celebrate Kenya’s 49th Jamhuri (Indepence) Day anniversary. The event which was jointly organized by the Embassy and the Permanent Delegation of Kenya to UNESCO, was graced with the presence of Hon. Prof. Peter Ayiecho Olweny, Kenya’s Assistant Minister for Education, and Dr. Evangeline Njoka, Secretary-General of the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM).
Hon. Olweny and Kenya’s Ambassador to France, H.E. Salma Ahmed, as well as Dr. Njoka each addressed the gathering. In his address, the Assistant Minister encouraged Kenyans in the Diaspora to participate as much as possible, in Kenya’s upcoming elections scheduled for March 2013. He also lauded the huge strides Kenya has made under the Kibaki administration, in the fight against corruption. And while he shared concerns about the security situation in Kenya at present, he assured the gathering that the Kenya Government is taking every appropriate measure to counter the terrorist threat within Kenya’s borders.
H.E. Dr. Mary M. Khimulu, Kenya’s Ambassador/ Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, was represented at the event by her senior management team.
