The Delegation of Kenya to UNESCO hosts the Africa Education Working Group end of year Cocktail
On Thursday, 15th December 2016, the Permanent Delegation of Kenya to UNESCO hosted the Africa Education Working Group End of Year Cocktail at the UNESCO Headquarters.
The main objective of the event was to celebrate the active participation of African Delegations in the meetings of the Africa Working Group on Education and also appreciate the collaboration with the UNESCO Education Sector, in an informal atmosphere.
H.E. Prof. George I. Godia, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Kenya to UNESCO, was unanimously elected chair of the Working Group on Education by the plenary of the Africa Group at UNESCO. The Working Group spearheads the Education Agenda for the UNESCO Africa Group. The Working Group served as a platform for the Africa Group, to have in-depth discussion on issues related to education, and notably the implementation of the Education 2030 Agenda in Africa.
In 2016, the Working Group met on several occasions focusing on education related thematic areas such as Teachers for Education 2030, Education Policy and Planning, the Implementation of Education 2030 in Africa, the Monitoring and Evaluation of Education 2030 in Africa and the implementation of the UNESCO TVET Strategy in Africa.
Also present at the cocktail event was the President of the Africa Group at UNESCO, H.E. Mr. Jacques Kabale, Ambassador/Permanent Delegation of Rwanda to UNESCO and the UNESCO Assistant Director General (ADG) for Africa, Mr. Firmin Matoko.
In his address, the President of the Africa Group at UNESCO appreciated Kenya’s engagement in chairing the Working Group in a professional manner. He appreciated the regular reports of the Working Group activities in the Africa Group plenary and encouraged the continuation of the Working Group in 2017.
The UNESCO ADG for Africa appreciated the cooperation between the Working Group and the UNESCO Secretariat and called for further cooperation in 2017.
Ambassador Godia, Chair of the Working Group appreciated the active participation of African Delegations in the meetings of the Working Group and the engagement of the staff at the Permanent Delegation of Kenya in delivering this important responsibility. The Ambassador also appreciated the contributions from other African Permanent Delegations to the event.
