Communication & Informations
Kenya’s partnership with UNESCO’s Communication and Information sector is focused on promoting freedom of expression, access to information, digital literacy, and media development. Through this collaboration, Kenya aims to empower its citizens with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the digital age, while safeguarding fundamental human rights such as press freedom and the safety of journalists.
One of Kenya’s key priorities is strengthening the media environment by enhancing the capacity of local media institutions and promoting ethical journalism. By participating in UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), Kenya supports media development initiatives that improve the quality of news, uphold journalistic standards, and foster independent, pluralistic media. This ensures that citizens have access to accurate, timely, and reliable information, which is essential for democratic participation.
Kenya is also a strong advocate for freedom of expression and works with UNESCO to ensure that the right to information is respected both online and offline. By aligning with UNESCO’s Windhoek+30 Declaration and participating in World Press Freedom Day celebrations, Kenya promotes policies that protect journalists, defend freedom of speech, and combat misinformation and disinformation in the digital space.
In the realm of digital literacy and inclusion, Kenya is committed to closing the digital divide by promoting Media and Information Literacy (MIL) programs that equip citizens, especially youth and marginalized groups, with the skills needed to critically evaluate information, use digital tools responsibly, and participate meaningfully in the digital economy. Kenya also collaborates with UNESCO to enhance digital inclusion, ensuring that the benefits of technology reach all segments of society, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Furthermore, Kenya is deeply involved in the preservation of documentary heritage through UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme. By safeguarding historical records and documents, Kenya ensures that its cultural and intellectual legacy is preserved for future generations while contributing to global knowledge-sharing.
Through its active engagement in UNESCO’s Communication and Information programs, Kenya is helping to build a more informed, inclusive, and connected society, where information and knowledge are accessible to all, fostering transparency, accountability, and democratic governance.
