Programs
The Permanent Delegation of Kenya to UNESCO is committed to promoting Kenya’s strategic interests across all UNESCO sectors: Education, Natural Sciences, Culture, Social and Human Sciences, and Communication and Information. Our programs are designed to align with both Kenya’s national development agenda, such as Vision 2030, and international commitments like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In Education, we work closely with UNESCO to improve access to quality education for all, with a special focus on early childhood education, higher education, technical and vocational training, and lifelong learning. By supporting innovative programs like Global Citizenship Education and the Greening Education Partnership, Kenya is positioned to play a leading role in educational reforms regionally and globally.
Our focus in Natural Sciences centers around leveraging Kenya’s rich natural resources while addressing critical challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and water management. By participating in UNESCO’s scientific initiatives, Kenya seeks to promote research, build local capacity, and apply science-based solutions to enhance sustainable development.
In the Culture sector, we take pride in promoting and safeguarding Kenya’s rich cultural heritage, including our UNESCO World Heritage Sites, intangible cultural practices, and creative industries. Our engagement with UNESCO’s legal instruments ensures the preservation and protection of Kenya’s diverse traditions and contributes to the growth of our cultural economy.
Kenya also plays an active role in Social and Human Sciences, advocating for human rights, gender equality, and youth empowerment. Through UNESCO’s programs, we contribute to building inclusive, equitable societies that address social justice issues and foster sustainable development. Kenya’s leadership in these areas ensures that our social policies are informed by evidence-based research and are adaptable to regional and global challenges.
In the Communication and Information sector, Kenya is dedicated to promoting the free flow of information, media development, and digital literacy. Our programs focus on empowering communities through access to information, protecting freedom of expression, and enhancing media and information literacy (MIL) to equip citizens with the skills to navigate the digital world responsibly.
Through these diverse programs, the Permanent Delegation works to ensure that Kenya remains at the forefront of UNESCO’s global agenda, contributing to solutions that benefit both the Kenyan people and the international community.
