Celebrating 60 Years of Water Science: Kenya’s Role at the Forefront

On June 11, 2025, at the global stage of UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to water sustainability and scientific collaboration during a landmark event celebrating 60 Years of Water Sciencesand the 50th Anniversary of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP).

Representing the country was Ambassador Dr. Kasera Achayo, Kenya’s Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, who delivered remarks on behalf of the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation. Dr. Achayo attended in her capacity as Chargée d’Affaires, marking Kenya’s strong diplomatic presence at this high-level gathering.

A Platform for Global Dialogue on Water

The Ministerial Roundtable formed the centerpiece of the anniversary celebrations, bringing together government ministers, diplomats, and water experts from around the world. Discussions focused on water-related challenges and the urgent need for international cooperation on sustainable water resource management.

In her address, Dr. Achayo highlighted Kenya’s ongoing initiatives to strengthen climate-resilient water infrastructure, improve access to clean water, and integrate scientific research into national water policies. She also reaffirmed Kenya’s support for UNESCO’s global hydrological programs and its role in facilitating south-south collaboration.

“Water is not just a resource; it is a right, a development driver, and a bridge between nations. Kenya remains committed to advancing integrated water resource management in alignment with SDG 6,” Dr. Achayo emphasized.

Celebrating 60 Years of Progress in Water Sciences

UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) is the only global initiative of its kind dedicated to water research, water education, and capacity building. Over five decades, it has helped nations better understand water systems, monitor hydrological cycles, and implement evidence-based policies.

This milestone event served as both a celebration and a call to action — urging member states to redouble efforts in managing water sustainably, especially in the face of climate change, population growth, and increasing demand.

Kenya’s Growing Leadership in Water Diplomacy

Kenya’s participation underscores its growing leadership in diplomatic and technical engagement on water issues. From the Nairobi Water Fund to its collaboration with UNESCO regional centers, the country continues to play a critical role in shaping Africa’s water resilience agenda.

As the world reflects on past achievements in water sciences, Kenya is clearly looking forward — advocating for innovation, equity, and international solidarity in managing one of humanity’s most vital resources.
