Reframing Authenticity: Africa’s Cultural Heritage Takes Center Stage in Nairobi

The International Conference on Cultural Heritage in Africa: A Dialogue on the Concept of Authenticity took place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 6th to 9th May 2025. Organized by UNESCO, the Government of the Republic of Kenya, and the African World Heritage Fund, the event sought to foster a dynamic exchange of research, experiences, knowledge, and perspectives on the concept of authenticity in African cultural heritage.

The event was held at the United Nations Complex in Gigiri and was graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Gender & Culture, Hon. Hannah W. Cheptumo, in the presence of H.E. Prof. Peter Ngure, Permanent Delegate of Kenya to UNESCO, and other high-level officials, including the Principal Secretary for Culture, the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa, and the Director of World Heritage.

H.E. Dr. William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, delivered a compelling keynote address, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to championing Africa’s living heritage — a heritage deeply rooted in community, spirit, and cultural continuity. President Ruto called on the global community to reframe how authenticity is understood and valued, challenging longstanding global heritage frameworks that often prioritize tangible relics over Africa’s vibrant, intangible cultural expressions.

The conference was also spearheaded by Amb. Prof. Peter Ngure, Head of the Kenyan Delegation to UNESCO, who has been at the forefront of organizing and coordinating the event. A significant outcome of the conference was the presentation of the Nairobi Declaration to H.E. President Ruto, marking a historic milestone in redefining the concept of authenticity in African cultural heritage.

This pivotal event will be remembered as a turning point for African heritage, underscoring Kenya’s leadership in the global heritage discourse. Stay tuned for more updates and outcomes as we continue to amplify African voices on the international stage.
