Kenya Submits Intangible Cultural Heritage File on Mwazindika Spiritual Dance for UNESCO Inscription

On May 2, 2024, the Republic of Kenya officially submitted a nomination file for the inscription of the Mwazindika Spiritual Dance of the Dawida community, located in Taita Taveta County, to be recognized under UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Mwazindika Spiritual Dance is a vital cultural expression of the Dawida people. It holds profound significance as a symbol of spiritual connection, community identity, and traditional knowledge passed down through generations. This dance is performed during rituals and ceremonies, embodying the rich heritage and values of the Dawida community in Kenya’s coastal region.

The submission of this cultural heritage file aims to preserve and protect the Mwazindika Spiritual Dance as part of Kenya’s broader efforts to safeguard intangible cultural heritage. By nominating this important cultural expression, Kenya seeks to ensure its continued transmission to future generations while promoting awareness of its value at both national and international levels.

The file was submitted to UNESCO under the 2003 Convention, which aims to protect the intangible cultural heritage of communities around the world. The inscription of the Mwazindika Spiritual Dance would not only elevate the profile of this unique cultural practice but also contribute to Kenya’s growing list of recognized heritage elements.

Kenya’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, H.E. Professor Peter K. Ngure, highlighted the significance of the nomination during the submission ceremony, expressing pride in Kenya’s rich cultural diversity. He noted that the preservation of traditional practices like the Mwazindika Dance is crucial for cultural identity and the well-being of communities.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Ms. Audrey Azoulay, commended Kenya for its dedication to the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and emphasized the important role that cultural expressions play in fostering global understanding and peace.

Kenya’s submission will be reviewed by UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee, with the decision on its inscription expected in the coming months.
