On May 13, 2025, students from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) at Strathmore University concluded their transformative learning tour across Spain and France with a remarkable visit to the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The visit offered the students a unique opportunity to engage with key global thought leaders in education, science, and culture at the world’s premier hub for fostering international cooperation and peace.
The Strathmore Students were welcomed by Prof. Peter Ngure, Dr. Achayo and staff of the Kenya Permanent Delegation to UNESCO. The engagement included insightful discussions with notable figures headed by:-
- Prof. Peter Ngure – Kenya’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, who provided valuable insights on Kenya’s contributions to UNESCO’s initiatives and the critical role of education in sustainable development.
- Mr. Peter Burger – Representative of the Ocean Decade at the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, who highlighted the urgent need for youth engagement in global ocean conservation efforts.
- Mr. Hans Thulstrup – Chief of the Ecological and Earth Sciences Section, who discussed the importance of ecological preservation and sustainable development.
- Ms. Sarlat Garance – Division of Research, Ethics and Inclusion, who emphasized the significance of research and ethical considerations in fostering inclusive societies.
- Ms. Akuorkor Plahar – Culture Programme Officer, Kenya Delegation to UNESCO, who underlined Kenya’s initiatives in preserving cultural heritage and promoting cultural diversity.
The visit was not only an academic milestone for the SHSS students but also an inspirational experience that underscored the vital role of global institutions like UNESCO in promoting dialogue, peace, and sustainable progress.
