Culture

Kenya’s rich and diverse cultural heritage is central to its identity, and the Permanent Delegation works closely with UNESCO to safeguard and promote this heritage both nationally and globally. Through UNESCO’s Culture Sector, Kenya actively engages in protecting its tangible and intangible cultural heritage, recognizing that culture plays a vital role in sustainable development, social cohesion, and economic growth.

Kenya’s involvement in UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention has seen the successful inscription of several iconic sites on the World Heritage List, such as Lamu Old Town, Fort Jesus, and the Sacred Mijikenda Kaya Forests. These cultural and natural landmarks are not only vital for preserving Kenya’s history and biodiversity but also serve as key attractions for cultural tourism, contributing significantly to the local economy.

In addition to tangible heritage, Kenya is deeply committed to safeguarding its intangible cultural heritage, such as traditional music, oral traditions, rituals, and festivals. Through UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Kenya has successfully inscribed several cultural expressions, including the Isukuti dance of the Luhya people and the Mijikenda cultural traditions. These initiatives ensure that Kenya’s cultural traditions are preserved for future generations while promoting their contribution to the global cultural dialogue.

Kenya also promotes creative industries as part of its cultural diplomacy, leveraging the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. By fostering artistic talent and supporting cultural entrepreneurs, Kenya aims to create a vibrant cultural economy that contributes to sustainable development. The Delegation is also involved in capacity building, promoting cultural education, and encouraging collaboration between local communities and international partners to develop and preserve Kenya’s cultural assets.

Through active participation in UNESCO’s culture programs, Kenya ensures that its heritage is not only preserved but also utilized as a dynamic resource for innovation, social integration, and economic development. These efforts continue to enhance Kenya’s visibility on the global stage as a leader in cultural diplomacy and heritage conservation.
