Natural sciences

Kenya’s engagement with UNESCO in the Natural Sciences sector focuses on advancing scientific research, innovation, and sustainable development.

Our priorities include tackling global challenges such as:

  • Climate change,
  • Biodiversity conservation,
  • Water resource management,
  • Disaster preparedness.

Through UNESCO’s scientific frameworks, Kenya strengthens its research capacity and fosters international cooperation to implement science-based solutions that drive sustainable development and resilience.

A key area of focus is climate change mitigation and adaptation. Kenya collaborates with UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme to protect and manage biosphere reserves, helping communities conserve ecosystems while supporting sustainable livelihoods. These efforts contribute to preserving biodiversity and promoting environmental sustainability. Kenya is also active in addressing water scarcity through UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), which supports sustainable water management, policy development, and research on groundwater resources.

Kenya’s participation in UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network and initiatives in environmental sciences promotes the preservation of geological heritage while encouraging ecotourism, education, and sustainable economic development. These programs align with Kenya’s broader objectives under Vision 2030, helping the country harness its natural resources for economic growth while safeguarding the environment for future generations.

In addition to environmental sustainability, Kenya is at the forefront of initiatives in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, promoting the role of science and innovation in national development. We collaborate with UNESCO to enhance science education and scientific research through capacity building, networking, and the development of local expertise in emerging fields such as biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy.

Through its engagement with UNESCO, Kenya actively contributes to global scientific initiatives while leveraging international partnerships to strengthen its local scientific community. These efforts ensure that science remains a driving force for Kenya’s sustainable development, helping to build a more resilient and prosperous future for all.
